On Kauai I just never experience the "stink-eye" many folks do on other islands like Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Even though I've only lived there (part time) a few years, no locals or kama'aina (including most of which I don't know) have ever given me a dirty look. My wife and I are both haole, but we blend well for the most part.To me Kona is only worth maybe 3 days and Waikoloa better beaches up there if looking for quality beach time. If planning on looping the Island and seeing Hamakua Coast, Hilo, and Volcano sites its best to put 2 nights on that side of the island right in the middle of your trip.Your best hiking will be in Volcano National Park and def. Would you recommend a 1 day trip to the Big Island or perhaps a 2 day trip. We are family of 4 with 12 and 14 yr olds.
